The Orchestra


The BSO comprises the UK’s most revered and talented musicians. Also appearing as The Mozart Symphony Orchestra and the Amadeus Orchestra, they play at many iconic music venues across the UK. The BSO push boundaries, playing new compositions as well the nation’s favourite classical music.

Philip Mckenzie

Philip MacKenzie, Principal Conductor


The British Symphony Orchestra will be under the meticulous direction of Philip MacKenzie for both nights. Philip is one of Europe’s most accomplished orchestral conductors who has shot to prominence in recent years gaining plaudits both at home and abroad.


He is principal conductor of London’s Mozart Symphony Orchestra and the Amadeus Orchestra. Currently he is Principal Guest Conductor of the Crimean State Symphony Orchestra. He is currently working with orchestras across the globe including the world famous Singapore Symphony Orchestra; The Bombay Chamber Orchestra; the renowned Czech Pardubice Chamber Orchestra; the Manchester Concert Orchestra and South Africa’s much loved Kwa-Zulu Natal Symphony Orchestra. He also frequently works with the fantastic Manchester Camerata. His most recent recordings have been highly commended by Gramophone Magazine.


Philip MacKenzie has recently conducted the Moscow TV and Radio State Orchestra and the chorus from the Kirov Opera in a sell-out performance of Mozart’s Requiem in Moscow. In September 2016 he shared a central London stage with Leslie Garratt and Kylie Minogue.

Michael Gurevich, Orchestra Leader


Dutch violinist and violist Michael Gurevich is the leader of The British Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared all over the world with renowned orchestras, playing in many famous venues. Radio broadcasts have included regular appearances on BBC Radio 3 as well as SWR2 in Germany; ABC Classic FM in Australia; CBC Radio in Canada and many others. With the London Haydn Quartet he has recorded critically acclaimed discs of Haydn’s op. 20 and op. 33 quartets. He’s also recorded, with the Rhodes Piano Trio on Champs Hill Records, a disc of Schumann’s piano trios.


Michael is assistant concertmaster of the Oxford Philomusica and has appeared as a guest leader and section principal with various major UK orchestras.


Passionate about teaching, Michael is a tutor at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and has given chamber music masterclasses at the Juilliard School, Oxford University, Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Royal Nothern College of Music, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory in Singapore and at the Domaine Forget in Canada.
